Our customers use all kinds of different credit cards, for all sorts of different reasons. Many companies offer cash back, air miles and extra benefits to keep people committed to using their cards. And for cardholders who want to keep collecting these extras, it can be very frustrating when businesses won’t accept their card of choice.

iZettle work with the world’s leading card providers so that you can accept all major credit cards and offer excellent customer service, no matter where you come from.

Visa and Mastercard

These are the two leading card providers in the industry. While Visa is known primarily for its debit cards, Mastercard is more recognised for credit cards and prepayment products.

China UnionPay (UnionPay/CUP)

In terms of purchase transactions, China UnionPay (often referred to as just UnionPay) is the 3rd largest card provider worldwide. In partnership with more than 1500 institutions worldwide, UnionPay International has enabled card acceptance in 162 countries, is issued in 42 countries and serves about 150 million users. CUP is the preferred card of Chinese travellers.

American Express (Amex)

American Express has more than 110 million users worldwide, all of whom are rewarded for their spending through a membership programme, cash back system and Avios points. This makes American Express a popular choice for consumers. However, American Express charges a high fee to merchants, and this means some businesses refuse to accept Amex payments. But at iZettle, you are only charged one transaction fee, no matter which cards you accept, so you never have to turn down a sale made using an Amex card!

Japan Credit Bureau (JCB)

This credit card provider dominates the Japanese market. JCB has 106 million users, making it one of the top five largest card provider. JCB Cardmembers can access special offers online and have access to JCB Plazas, a face to face concierge-like service that helps them to book travel and discover local attractions, which makes them popular with tourists and business travellers.

JCB have a strategy of financial inclusion, so many cardmembers in emerging Asian markets may exclusively have a JCB-branded card and not have access to any other cards. This is why, if you wish to accept payments from Japanese tourists and business travellers, you should use a payment system like iZettle that works together with JCB.

Discover/Diner’s Club

Discover is an American card network, and Diners Club is like its international counterpart.
It has 70 million users across the world. Diners Club cardholders receive cashback on purchases (up to 5% depending on how much the card is used,) airport lounge access, car rental benefits and no fees are applied to foreign transactions. This makes it a popular choice for American tourists and business travellers.

In a 2016 Discover survey, they found that 61% of Discover cardholders were more likely to revisit merchants who accepted their card. And with US tourists spending £3 billion in the UK per year, it pays to use a credit card machine that accepts Discover/Diner’s Club.

What will the new Boiler Plus 2018 legislation changes mean to you?

What will the new Boiler Plus 2018 legislation changes mean to you?

Confused about Boiler Plus – we’ll put your mind to rest…

The new ‘Boiler Plus’ legislation was implemented on April 6th2018 by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). With the aim of maximising the energy efficiency of UK homeowners’ heating systems, Boiler Plus is the first major piece of legislation to be introduced since the UK went ‘all condensing’ in 2005.

What does Boiler Plus mean?

From April 6th, all boilers must now have a minimum ErP (Energy related Products) rating of 92% and all gas and oil boilers must have appropriate time and temperature controls fitted. Ultimately, the aim is to phase out inefficient boilers and reduce carbon emissions in line with EU targets.

In addition, when installed, combi boilers must have one of four of the following requirements fitted:

  • Load compensation – flow temperature can be modulated from the boiler based on room temperature
  • Weather compensation – flow temperature can be modulated based on the outside temperature
  • Smart control – automation and optimisation control
  • Flue Gas Heat Recovery – a system that enables the boiler to reuse heat that would have otherwise been wasted

Which requirement is fitted depends on the homeowner’s needs and circumstances. This means that a consultation is needed between the heating engineer and customer before any installation takes place in order to gauge which measure is most appropriate for the homeowner and their property.

How will the new Boiler Plus legislation affect you?

If you already have had a boiler installed and it’s in full working order and regularly checked and serviced, then the Boiler Plus legislation won’t have any impact on you until it comes time to replace your boiler. However if you are about to have a new boiler installed, please read on.

At the moment, around one third of boilers on the market fall short of the 92% ErP rating. Therefore, it is imperative that you make sure that you use a trustworthy, Gas Safe registered engineer, who will fit a boiler that meets the energy efficiency requirements set out by Boiler Plus. Don’t be tempted by cheaper prices and false promises – using someone who is not Gas Safe registered is both illegal and potentially fatal. If you knowingly allow work to be carried out that is not compliant with the legislation, you could be prosecuted and fined up to £5,000.

Otherwise, it’s very much about choosing the right requirement. Each has its own purpose, cost and benefit:

  • Load compensation – these thermostats cost around £100 more than standard and automatically adjust your radiator temperature depending on how warm or cold your home is. If you are someone who tends to leave your heating on for long periods, you should see significant savings
  • Weather compensation – again, about £100 more than a standard thermostat and come with similar benefits, although radiator temperature is gauged on outside temperature
  • Smart control – control your heating through your smartphone or tablet, wherever in the world you are. Although you may not see huge savings, you have instant control at all times
  • Flue Gas Heat Recovery – these systems reuse heat from your boiler – heat that would have otherwise been wasted. This improves your boiler’s efficiency and according to research, enables it to use 4% less gas whilst delivering the same amount of heat.

If you are still unsure, talk to your heating engineer as they will be able to provide professional advice to help you choose the most suitable energy saving device. By choosing sensibly, the energy savings you make over the years should easily pay for the additional cost over your boiler’s lifetime.

For installers

The main thing to consider is that if you do not install a boiler that is in line with the new Boiler Plus legislation, you are breaking the law and can be prosecuted as such by Building Control. In addition, the HSE could become involved as the Gas Safe register is well within its rights to raise safety concerns regarding your work.

What is CO Poisoning ?

What is CO Poisoning ?

What is CO poisoning?

Unsafe gas appliances can produce a highly poisonous gas called carbon monoxide (CO). It can cause death as well as serious long term health problems such as brain damage.
CO is produced by the incomplete burning of natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This happens when a gas appliance has been incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained. It can also occur if flues, chimneys or vents are blocked.
Oil and solid fuels such as coal, wood, petrol and oil can also produce carbon monoxide.
CO poisoning occurs when you breathe in the gas and it replaces oxygen in your bloodstream. Without oxygen, your body tissue and cells die. Even small amounts of the gas can cause CO poisoning, and long term effects can include paralysis and brain damage.

What is Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
Remember the six main symptoms to look out for:

  1. headaches
  2. dizziness
  3. nausea
  4. breathlessness
  5. collapse
  6. loss of consciousness

Being aware of the symptoms could save your life
CO symptoms are similar to those of flu, food poisoning, viral infections and fatigue. That’s why it’s quite common for people to mistake this very dangerous poisoning for something else.
Other signs that could point to CO poisoning:

  • Your symptoms only occur when you are at home and seem to disappear when you leave home.
  • Others in your household (including pets) are experiencing similar symptoms and they appear at a similar time.

What to do if you suspect CO poisoning

  • Get fresh air immediately. Open doors and windows, turn off gas appliances and leave the house.
  • See your doctor immediately or go to hospital – let them know that you suspect CO poisoning. They can do a blood or breath test to check.
  • If you think there is an immediate danger, call the Gas Emergency Helpline on 0800 111 999.
  • Ask a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect your gas appliances and flues to see if there is a dangerous problem.
